TAMWORTH FOLK CLUB GUEST NIGHT REVIEW
June 2005

Rhyzone

Friday 24th June was not only one of the lightest nights of the year, coming just after the summer solstice, but it turned out to be one the best nights at the Gamecock for a guest night.
Sitting by the door and taking the pre-booked tickets from our regular audience, gave me the chance to view the proceedings from the end of the room and judge the reaction of the audience.

It fell on Bob not only to MC the night but also to provide the support act as unfortunately Charlie and Adrian Button had not turned up, as at this moment, I know not why.
In fact Bob, Jim and Peter opened up the night with the usual cracking performance, in laughter and song, ( just proves what pros they are) and all without Bobs music stand.
After the "warm up" act it was the turn of Rhyzone to take the floor. Barry Hunt, Graham Peebles and Helen Marsh are a comparatively new collaboration of experienced talented musicians and skilled songwriters, with guitar, bouzouki, harmonica, keyboard, accordion and mandola, with just the right amount of PA to bring out their instruments without distorting their voices and deafening the audience.

The repertoire was a stimulating fusion of songs in a variety of styles from folk / rock to homespun written material which were given a rousing reception.

The break came far too quickly and the "houselights" came on to enable us to fumble for our pound coins for the raffle.

With the lights once more dimmed it was apparent that word had spread about the non-appearance of the "Buttons" and John Davies sprang to the call of his fellow members and joined them "on stage". Mike was also in the audience but had to be excused, as his double bass was not with him, well you would not carry that in your car if you had not got to.
Opening up with one of the favourites and interspersed with mirth The Old Castle Band once again proved that they could hold an audience spellbound, but you must remember they had paid for their tickets this night.

Rhyzome performed the second half with all the members playing solo numbers as well as a grand mix of instruments which incidentally can be heard on a brand new CD called Mayday released this very evening.
Another grand night at The Gamecock.
